The Definition of Bounce Rate

Bounce Rate as defined by Google Analytics is:

“The percentage of single-page visits (i.e. visits in which the person left your site from the entrance page). Bounce Rate is a measure of visit quality and a high Bounce Rate generally indicates that site entrance (landing) pages aren’t relevant to your visitors.”

A visitor can also bounce from your site by

  • Clicking on a link to a page on a different website
  • Clicking the back button to leave your website
  • Closing an open window or tab site
  • Typing a new URL
  • Session timeout

It’s important to understand your bounce rate because Google takes it into account when determining how to rank your site. But it signals some other things as well.



Why Does Bounce Rate Matter?

In addition to having a leading role in how your site is ranked in search engines, bounce rate also signals how you can expect your online business to do in sales each month. If a lot of people visit your website and bounce before they get to your product pages, the less online sales you’re going to make.


It doesn’t matter what kind of online business you’re running. You never want to scare visitors off with confusing copy or ancient web design. Everybody knows that.

However, there are more factors that affect bounce rate than the design of your site and the copy on its pages.



How To Make A Website Unbounceable

Unbouncable is totally a word for the purpose of this post. Just go with it.

First things first, make sure you’re aware of everything that can affect bounce rate on your website:

  • Purpose of the page
  • Type of audience
  • Links to external sites
  • Landing page design
  • Landing page message
  • Page load time
  • Pop-up ads
  • Search engine ranking of page (pages that rank highly for irrelevant keywords have high bounce rates)

After taking all of that into account, you can then take some extra steps to improve the amount of the time people are spending on your website.

  • Above all else, the trick is to make sure you’re providing interest and relevant content to your audience.

    For example, if your online business is all about camping gear, make sure you’re describing the benefits of your products specifically to the people you want to appeal to: campers, hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, etc. Use your blog to provide camping tips, how-tos, and best of lists that shoppers will find useful when browsing for new gear and planning trips.

    Always keep what your audience wants in mind when putting any and all copy on your website and landing pages.

  • Even though we said it isn’t everything, design still counts for something. If your web design is easy on the eyes and relevant to the theme of your product line, visitors are more likely to stick around and engage.

    You should make it a priority to design a clear navigation path/menu system. The less clicks visitors have to make to get where they want to go, the less likely they are to bounce. We’re lazy creatures when you get down to it.

    Pro tip: It’s also a good idea to put a structure in place so that any external links you have on your site or in your blog posts open in a new window.

  • Utilize call-to-action buttons. Calls-to-action or CTAs help guide people through your website and shows them what to do next. CTAs make it easy for people to take the action they hopefully came to your site with intentions of in the first place.

    Your CTA should always have a clear directive and be easy to click on. No surprises. In our opinion, the less pop-ups, the better.

Open Site Explorer has been around for 6 years now and it’s still one of the most underrated backlinking tools on the internet.

Developed by Moz and freely available to anyone who wants to use it, Open Site Explorer is the perfect tool for “developing a high quality inbound link profile.” With Open Site Explorer, you can find link building opportunities, research backlinks, and discover problematic links.

The linking data available with this tool is powerful stuff. You just paste a URL into the search bar and get instant access into that particular link’s domain authority, page authority, established links, just discovered links, and social likes and shares from Twitter and Facebook.

Since all that’s required is a URL to use Open Site Explorer, it’s an excellent resource for checking competitor websites in addition to your own backlink strengths and weaknesses.

You can run up to three reports a day for free, but if you want more you have to sign up for a Moz Community Account (which is also free). However, if you want unlimited data and unlimited reports, you’ll need a Moz Pro Account, which isn’t free.

If you’re looking for an insanely easy backlinking tool to use that provides you with all the basics (for free!), Open Site Explorer is a great place to start your backlinking journey.


Ahrefs provides a variety of tools that help you better understand your backlinks. It also gives you a pretty clear overview of what your competition is up to these days.

One of the top features of Ahrefs is the Positions Explorer. You can use Positions Explorer to “reveal every keyword your competitors are ranking for in search engines.”

With this, you can also see things like which of your competitors pages are ranking highly, how much organic traffic they’re getting, how much paid traffic they’re getting, the keywords they pay for when running ads, and the landing pages where they send traffic.

Of course, the star of the show here is the Ahrefs Alerts tool. Anytime someone mentions your business on the internet, or any keywords you’re monitoring, you’ll know about it with Ahrefs Alerts. You can also keep up with competitor mentions.


Check My Links

Check My Links is a Chrome extension and it’s a very simple tool to use for building backlinks. It’s not the sexiest tool on this list but it’s still useful.

One of the easiest ways to build your backlinks bank is by pointing out broken links on other websites (politely and to the appropriate person) and suggesting the broken link be replaced with one to your website.

Check My Links exists to make this easier. When the extension is enabled you can check the status of every link on a webpage. Links that are active will show up as green. Links that are broken will be displayed as red, notifying you of the backlink opportunity.

If you’ve never tried broken link building before don’t let that stop you from giving it a try now. You might be pleasantly surprised at how effective it can be.



Linkody, not dissimilar to Ahrefs,  gives you numerous tools  that help you with your backlinks in addition to keeping up with your competitors.

Once you get your results you can filter by last post date and domain authority to ensure you’re reaching out to active blogs and are considering blogs with a strong reputation.

You’ll also get the ability to track your results from an impressive dashboard. This gives you a clear view of what’s working, what isn’t, and how you can adjust your approach for (continued) success in the future.

GroupHigh definitely takes some getting used to but once you’ve got the hang of it you’ll be hard-pressed to find a tool that gives you more insight into your website’s SEO, social analytics, and link building.



If your priority is geared towards optimizing and managing every part of local search, Whitespark is the tool you’re looking for.

An example of this would be searching the term “Atlanta breweries” in Google which returns some of the best beer options in the state capital including Sweetwater Brewing, Orpheus Brewing, Second Self Beer Company (personal fave!) and others.
